The local area

Hurst green has become synonymous with the Tolkien Trail, a 5.5 mile circular walk that has put this pretty village on the map. Home to the magnificent Stonyhurst College, where JRR Tolkien was once old boy, the area has been said to have inspired his creation of Hobbiton. As you walk in the footsteps of the famous author, you will soon come to understand why Stonyhurst has become a popular film location. The boundless landscape of the Ribble Valley lends itself, not only to walking, but it is home to the Lancashire Cycleway, and reservoirs and lakes for fly fishing. Clitheroe is a bustling market town just 5.5 miles from the Shireburn Arms and plays host to many independent shops, a Norman castle, gardens and pavement cafes.
